In the RDX, Acura finally has a stylish, sophisticated crossover that drives as nicely as it looks — or, put another way, one that finally competes head on the big boys.

Much of what made the original RDX feel special — the firm ride, turbo antics, and crisp handling — are gone from this 2013 version, but don’t despair. The new RDX is more mature for a more mature buyer.

Acura has implemented changes in the 2nd generation RDX that better targets the needs of real buyers. Treading softer and more efficiently isn’t necessarily a bad thing, especially if it’s what your audience is into.

From its improved fuel economy to the smoother ride quality, enhanced refinement and linear power delivery, the 2013 Acura RDX is far better equipped to take on its crossover rivals. The end product of these alterations is a wholly accomplished and enjoyable vehicle.

The 2013 RDX truly lives up to the term “entry-level luxury.”

Acura’s RDX is now more refined and more comfortable, while continuing to offer plenty of get up and go. Best of all, the RDX now delivers sedan-like fuel economy with improved aesthetics and a more user-friendly interior.

The RDX proves that as far a compact premium crossovers go, when it comes to the balance between performance and luxury, compromise isn’t always a bad thing.

It isn’t that there are areas in which the RDX excels, it’s that there are no areas in which it really disappoints. That isn’t faint praise. This is an all-around fine vehicle with a for-the-class bargain price, and that should not be taken as a subtle endorsement.

The 2013 Acura RDX is a very comfortable vehicle for up to five. It offers a premium driving character with agile handling, a smooth ride, and plenty of power. Empty-nesters and DINKs (duel income no kids) will like it much better than the last model.

The 2013 RDX sort of “joins the herd” in terms of overall character and performance, and then immediately attempts to gain separation in the more traditional arenas of ride quality, content, fuel economy, and price.

The name’s the same, but that’s the only commonality between the new RDX and its predecessor. The package is more refined—a little roomier and a lot quieter, more comfortable, and attractive, with a nice array of standard luxury features.

The redesigned 2013 Acura RDX is better armed to win over shoppers — it’s larger, lighter and more efficient — while offering an attractive value proposition.
