Excellent craftsmanship, a top speed of 130 mph, up to 5,500 lbs. of towing capacity, and nearly 75-cubic feet of cargo hauling capacity shows that Audi is really on to something with the 2011 Q7 TDI quattro.

The Q7’s shocks deliver a creamy ride with minimal brake dive and body roll. The quick steering seems to shrink the Q7 down to Q5-size, especially when parking. Many midsize sedans don’t handle and steer this well.

The Q7 is probably about a year away from an overhaul that will reduce its weight and hone its handling. Until then, Audi will remain an also-ran in the race to build a fuel-efficient and accommodating big SUV.

The 2010 Audi Q7 TDI delivers on its promise of performance and fuel economy. It’s also the most worthwhile of the Q7 engine options.

Like mimes and men’s turtlenecks, clean diesel vehicles have been popular in Europe for a while. Jury’s out on whether or not they’ll catch on here, but if the upcoming diesels perform as solidly as the Q7 TDI, I hope to see more of them.

A Cayenne is sportier and a Range Rover is more statusy. A Touareg is cheaper ($8K less with the same engine) but if you’re going to buy an Audi Q7, the diesel is the one you want.
