I’ll stand behind my choice of the 135i over an M3. The 135i is all the sporting car this probably-sillier-than-most scofflaw needs. It costs half as much, is easier to live with and is, as far as I am concerned, the best car BMW makes.

The BMW 1 Series has all the style, performance and features a driver could want in a compact package. It’s built around one of the best chassis in the segment, and the only one with rear-wheel drive.

It’s not the 1 Series M, but we’ll take it. The 2013 BMW 135is ratchets up the raw performance of the very capable 1 Series.

There’s still a lot to like with thee 1-Series, assuming you can live with the limited interior room. Its handling is quite good, and it nicely balances cornering ability with ride comfort.

The lesson with the 135i DCT (and all BMWs with a dual-clutch automatic) is that there’s now even less shame in paying more to get your Bimmer with one less pedal.

The good news is that the switch from twin- to single-turbo six hasn’t affected the 135i’s character noticeably. Those who would have chosen the automatic last year will be happy with the dual-clutch upgrade.

The 2012 BMW 135i convertible is like a sawed-off version of the 3 Series convertible. Speed, agility and handling are all similar. But I’d have a hard time paying a premium price for a tiny car with such a remedial rear seat.

The 2011 BMW 135i should be bought first and foremost by those looking for arguably the most unfiltered BMW driving experience. At its base MSRP, the 135i’s performance is practically unchallenged.
