This could be BMW’s most well-rounded vehicle. If you are looking to increase your fuel efficiency without sacrificing a sporting drive, or if you’re even just a little bit curious about clean-diesel Euro technology, you have to get behind the wheel of a 335d.

The BMW 335d offers gobs of performance with great fuel economy, and it’ll convince anyone who gets behind its wheel that diesels are no longer dirty, noisy and slow.

If you’re shopping in this price range and have an ounce of social responsibility, then the 2009 BMW 335d is undeniably appealing. There isn’t another car that can match its strengths. And it doesn’t have many weaknesses.

BMW says the 335d is good for 0-60 sprints in 6.0 seconds – if that’s not enough to convince anyone of modern diesel performance, we don’t know what is.

The 335d is proof that diesel cars can do anything, and it is a 3-series through-and-through: It has the same great handling that BMW owners have come to expect.

As good as the BMW’s 3-series gas engines are, the diesel is better. Nothing gives the driver a sense of power quite like a having a mountain-sized torque plateau at one’s right foot.

The BMW 335d rages in the mind as among the sweetest machines on four wheels. Not despite its diesel engine, but largely because of it.

It sounds too good to be true — sport-sedan performance with econo-car mileage. But after our first drive of a U.S. spec 335d in Europe, it appears to deliver on the promise.

The 335d is legitimately fast: zero to sixty in six seconds, which is quicker than the manual-transmission 328i. And \ the government will actually pay you $900 to buy this 130-mile-per-hour luxury car. Buy a Bimmer, stick it to the Man.
