A steady stream of improvements and innovations, plus an admirable blend of comfort, craftsmanship and performance, has set this midsize BMW apart from the middle-of-the-road cars. The 2013 BMW 5 Series proudly carries on this tradition, although its core message of performance has been obscured by luxury.

I’m still a fan of the 528i. I’m impressed that BMW has given us a fuel economy improvement of around 8% while improving performance and without altering the basic character of the car. If this is the future of fuel economy, bring it on!

The turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder deserves a permanent place under the hood of the 5 Series. Couple that with an excellent all-wheel-drive system and a proven chassis and the 2012 528i continues to be the main force to be reckoned with in the midsize luxury segment.

The BMW 5 Series sedans remain chic, crisp and distinguished for their aggressive styling and driving character. They are a bit on the big-and-heavy side, but their excellent vehicle dynamics and agility make them excellent family sedans.

Most of the people purchasing one want exactly what the BMW 535i delivers: a safe, well-built, handsome luxury object that lets friends and strangers know how well they’re doing financially.

The 2012 BMW 528i is a car with an unusual breadth of personality, ranging from comfortable econo-sedan to sporting four-door. And this efficient new twin-turbo four allows it to pull off these character switches with conviction.

Possessing a strong combination of performance, comfort and technology, the 2012 BMW 5 Series is a top choice in the midsize luxury sedan segment. However, BMW loyalists may be a bit disappointed.

The new 528i is a triumph of the market, if not the enthusiast. It offers more power, performance, and fuel economy from a smaller, more efficient, albeit more expensive, package.

The 2012 BMW 528i xDrive sport sedan is a great car in many ways, but the poor performance of its fuel-saving auto-stop feature grievously reduces its appeal.

If the 5 Series Gran Turismo’s sport sedan/SUV cross-pollination seems like a neat idea, this BMW will no doubt work out well for you. We’re just not sure who asked for it.

The new 2011 BMW 5-Series really impressed me. Here’s something you will rarely see me write: even at $73,300, this car is worth every single penny based on quality and driving enjoyment.

Graced with lusciously smooth operation, amazing dynamic abilities, an outstanding hi-tech feature-set and the undeniable cachet BMW’s cars justifiably possess, it’s hard to imagine a more desirable car than the 2011 BMW 5 Series.
