The BMW 650i is an impressive car that does many things well. If you like but don’t love cars, it will probably seem superbly done. If, on the other hand, you are a car lover, the 650i’s lack of character may leave you yearning for more.

The 2012 BMW 6 Series is perhaps the best overall package in the small segment of near-millionaire large convertibles and coupes (i.e. sub Bentley/Aston Martin).

If you want to look good, drive around surrounded by BMW’s best interior yet, and do so for as little money as possible, there’s no reason not to do it in a 640i. Except maybe the steering.

Despite being one of the last of its kind, the 650i’s design and performance keep it from feeling anachronistic.

With classier styling and significantly more low-end power, the 2012 BMW 6 Series continues its evolution as a world-class grand touring coupe and convertible.

It’s a shame that the hardtop is not as well-loved as its convertible sibling is, but it’s clear the firm has you covered, or uncovered, whichever way your preferences lean. For us? We’ll stray from the norm and slip inside the sexy 650i Coupe.

We like the 640i best among the BMW 6 Series cars. It’s the simplest, smoothest and sweetest, with an impeccable engine, transmission, ride and brakes. Its styling is beautiful and interior luxurious. The downside is that some of the electronic features are over-engineered and maddening, but that’s standard for BMW.

It’s big, luxurious, and fast. The 2012 BMW 650i banishes the awkward look of its predecessor with a sharp new design. The 650i is a big car, but it throws down performance figures that other similarly powered and much lighter machines could only dream of.

The 6 Series seems at one with itself, not its driver — so relaxed and capable that its pilot seems to observe the action from a distance. You don’t have to be a silver-haired fox, or a cougar, to grasp the Bimmer’s vault-on-wheels appeal.

If you need a sportscar and a high performance sedan, look no further than Bimmer’s 650i. Granted, it’s a tad pricey. But if you perceive it as 2 cars in 1, you’re on the right reasoning track.
