Considering its improved driving quality and its docile/ferocious split personality, the new Grand Sport Vitesse is not only the most powerful and fastest roadster on earth, but also the most desirable Bugatti Veyron 16.4.

The Bugatti Veyron Super Sport defines “amazing” in the automotive world. Yes, it costs a fortune, but in these days of the diminishing mean regarding automotive quality and speed, it takes cubic dollars to deliver performance that is truly outstanding.

The Vitesse is the most talented and dramatic incarnation of the Veyron so far. And for those with the means the Vitesse does something no other car can claim — it takes an ocean of power and manages to tame it into a package that’s as useable around town as it is beyond 200 mph.

Odd thing about the Veyron: It is the least sexy exotic on the market. But you buy it for the direct link from the accelerator to your endorphin receptors. This is not a car. It’s the world’s most expensive rollercoaster ride.

What the 2011 Bugatti Veyron Super Sport does is to stretch even further the Veyron’s weird contrast between its almost uncontrolled acceleration and the complete control of the chassis.

It exists mainly as an objet d’art for its owner and a one-car circus parade for the fawning public. It is perhaps the apogee of internal-combustion performance, the final word before the dawning dictatorship of electric pods. It is a Bugatti Veyron Super Sports.

The Bugatti Veyron will be remembered as the pinnacle of twenty-first century combustion automobile engineering. Future automobiles will always fall short of this supercar’s cylinder count, insatiable appetite for petrol and explosive raw horsepower.

Bugatti built a sportier version of the Veyron—because, obviously, the Veyron was such a sissy cupcake of a car. The result? The hackneyed comparison would be to say the Super Sport looks like some kind of space ship, but if extraterrestrials exist, I seriously doubt they are this cool.

At $2.3 million, the Super Sport is about as expensive a car as you’ll find. But considering no other production car can achieve the Bugatti’s 258-mph top speed, if bragging rights are what’s ultimately important, there’s no other car worth considering.
