In terms of raw capabilities, these new Heavy Duty Silverados edge the Fords in most categories, but not by any amount big enough to be truly meaningful. What may tilt the scales toward GM, however, is its superior ride quality, engine refinement and features like smart exhaust braking.

With class-leading towing, hauling, and power, plus better fuel economy, and a more refined ride, the new Chevy Silverado doesn’t need a toothy new grille to make a statement.

I drove a Chevrolet Silverado 3500 crew cab with a 9,000 pound trailer. I have never driven anything that long, but technology that made the drive a lot easier. I had to remind myself that I was driving a vehicle that was longer than six Smart car.

The final result is a truck that is pleasant and confidence-inspiring. I am here to state that after having driven the Ram 2500 HD, the Ford F-250 and a Chevy Silverado 2500 HD, the Chevy has the best drive.

Right now the Chevy Silverado (and GMC Sierra) are the best choices for extreme towing and hauling in the heavy duty segment. If you are happy with GM’s interior, you’ll love the rest of the truck.

The 2012 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD stands as a solid choice. Its strong engine beefy suspension, handsome styling and (in the upper trims) a stylish and finely finished cabin also add to this big brute’s allure.

Every dollar spent on revising the Silverado HD pickup had to be allocated carefully. While the exterior and interior of the truck remain pretty much the same, lots was devoted to the truck’s platform and power train – as they should be.
