The Sonic is more fun to drive than the outgoing Aveo. It also looks pretty good. It’s nicely loaded, comfortable and performs OK on the road.

Name a category and the Sonic either matches or dominates its competitors. If you’re considering downsizing but aren’t looking to downgrade in the process, go drive a 2012 Chevrolet Sonic LTZ.

Run the 2012 Sonic hard and it’s genuine fun. It has a nice nose, handsome wheels and bright accents, which is not to say it’s not a bit of an ugly duckling, but the real revelation is the interior.

The Sonic is well balanced, not just in driving dynamics, but everywhere. The styling is attractive and the interior, despite a few little grumbles, is good. What GM has done here is to banish all the cheapness and disappointment that used to be part of the small car experience.

The overall improved design, engineering and build quality of the new Sonic justifies every penny of its higher cost over the Aveo. But the Sonic gains little in value-for-dollar bragging rights.

The new Sonic is a very good subcompact. It’s youthfully styled, reasonably spirited, comfortable, well equipped, efficient, and appears very well made in the good old U.S. of A.

Sonic is a good car: useful, easy to drive, a good value. It’s just not the high-class, scintillating little scooter we were expecting. For many buyers, though, it could hit the sweet spot.

We were gobsmacked by the LTZ’s fundamental goodness. It cruises confidently, handles deftly, accelerates eagerly, and sips fuel like an ’85 Tercel. Oh, and like every Sonic, it’s got one of the coolest instrument panels on the planet.
