Practicality aside, it’s still a Ferrari. The FF hits 62 mph in 3.7 seconds with a top speed of more than 200. There are no obvious drawbacks to the AWD. A short time ago I didn’t even know this car existed. Now it’s all I can think about.

This is the Ferrari for people who aren’t buying their first Ferrari. Understand that, and you understand the decision to step outside the safe confines of supercar orthodoxy. The FF is a new branch on the family tree. It’s a daring car, and I love the confidence it represents.

$300,000 may seem a bit surreal, but based on what the 2012 Ferrari FF can do and what it is, this is entirely reasonable and consistent within the Ferrari context.

Added to the list of firsts — Ferrari makes a shooting brake, Ferrari makes a four-wheel-drive car — is the first time Ferrari has ever handed over the keys to a journalist, in the snow, and not been concerned in the least. This is Ferrari’s coolest car in a long, long time.

The Ferrari FF is bound to disappoint any serious enthusiast who has sampled a 458. It’s just a bit too Ferrari for Dummies in some ways — automated and idiot-proofed for insanely wealthy novice drivers.

Mechanically, the FF, with its innovative approach to on-demand all-wheel-drive, is everything you would expect from Ferrari. Should Ferrari have built such an all-season GT entry? It’s a debate that will go on in Ferrari circles for some time.

As a stylish way of getting up to the slopes, the Ferrari FF has no peers. That it succeeds so well as a driver’s car is icing on the cake.

Those out there who are so caught out by the non-traditional nature of the FF are only going to cheat themselves. It takes all of the racing lore Ferrari puts into each car it builds and adds every single bit of correct versatility that we’d add were we in charge.

The FF is not traditionally handsome. But it is my favorite of any car I’ve tested over an extended time. Once inside you’ll forget that rear end. Trust me.
