The Hyundai Equus remains an impressive full-size sedan with plenty of performance, features, and luxury. And its starting price massively undercuts the competition.

The Hyundai Equus continues to gain ground in winning over luxury buyers. With its attractive styling, smooth-as-silk handling and excellent warranty, it is a solid choice in the luxury sedan segment.

The Equus is offered with a single powertrain, and it’s impressively strong. This grandly proportioned sedan mimics the dimensions and the features of established high-zoot rides. And it does so for thousands less.

Consider the 2012 Hyundai Equus Signature sedan. With me, it was love at first sight. The Equus is a marvelous car, perhaps one of the best full-size luxury values available.

The 5.0 makes the Hyundai Equus much more relevant in the debate about full-size luxury cars. There’s a good argument to be made here, especially for those buyers that value substantial luxury and value more than they do a badge.

The 2012 Hyundai Equus Ultimate is a reasonably executed flagship luxury sedan. But when you’re playing in the $60,000 and above range, there’s a special X factor that becomes increasingly important, and that’s what the Equus arguably lacks.

The amount of equipment the Equus delivers for the price is simply unbeatable. But Hyundai isn’t Mercedes or BMW. If I was going to spend $60k on a luxury car, I’d get an Audi A6, a BMW 5-series, or a Mercedes-Benz E-Class — and I’d advise you to do the same.

The peerless ride quality, middling interior quality and most of all, the understated aesthetics of the Hyundai Equus bring to mind the now departed Town Car. It offers a viable luxury option for the quietly affluent.

The Equus is a vehicle no one asked for that arrived on U.S. shores already a few years out of date. With new competition leap-frogging already-more-updated models, the Equus simply can’t compete, no matter how terrific the power plant.
