My criticisms stem from how close the new Infiniti M comes to perfection rather than how far it falls from it. Compare it to existing competitors rather than an evasive ideal, and it stacks up very well for anyone who prioritizes the driving experience over silence and spaciousness.

The new Infiniti M is a fairly and competitively priced, voluptuously styled luxury car that most drivers would agree wants for nothing in standard form and offers a huge array of options for customizing.

The Infiniti M56 is one top performer among a rarefied set of highly capable competitors. Maybe the M’s more dramatic styling will finally earn it the public recognition and votes that it deserves.

Though I found the power of the M56’s V8 intoxicating, the V6 in the M37 is so great and so well-matched to the vehicle that I actually felt more confident behind the wheel when driving the M with the smaller engine.

Infiniti finally sits shoulder-to-shoulder with the best techno-sleds of Europe and Asia. By focusing on craftsmanship, but not forgetting the smaller G37’s fun-to-drive attitude, Infiniti has finally given the M the credibility to stand on its own.

The M56 wants to cruise, but the M37 wants to romp, rollick and spend the afternoon intoxicated by its own redline. Short of the turbocharged BMW 535i, the M37 may be the only six-cylinder-powered car in this class that a hardcore driving enthusiast could really love.

So Infiniti’s created a luxurious four-door that looks gorgeous, goes fast and doesn’t have much space in the back. The Infiniti M37 suddenly has our attention.

The all-new M37X deserves to be the flagship of almost anybody’s lineup. In many ways, it is a perfectly balanced automobile, precisely positioned between sport and luxury, infused with technology but not intimidating, elegantly styled without being flashy.

Infiniti is taking a bigger swing at its German competitors. The original M had most of the performance but none of the panache required to woo the faithful out of their Teutonic sedans. The M, especially in its 37X guise, is a far more concerted effort.

The 2011 Infiniti M37, available with rear-wheel or all-wheel drive, is a fine automobile. Its interior of leather and Japanese-ash wood trim bespeaks luxury with taste.

The 2011 Infiniti M37 and M56 are terrific luxury sport sedans, the best Japan has to offer.
