The 2012 Jeep Compass is one of the most affordable off-road-capable vehicles on the market, but it’s still not as refined as many of its compact SUV competitors.

Its newfound off-road abilities expand the 2011 Jeep Compass’ repertoire far beyond its previous capabilities. Its interior looks and feels — dare we say it — nice. Jeep is delivering a competitive package.

The 2011 Jeep Compass is better than it was before, but still not up to par with the competition. Sexier styling, cargo space, a competitive price and off-roading chops are selling points, but there are points of weakness as well.

With the new looks and Patriot matching off-road ability, the updated 2011 Compass is making a bid to rescue Jeep’s small CUV reputation.

Now that it has the much improved looks and added off-road capabilities, finally, the 2011 Compass is the vehicle Jeep intended it to be. But its MSRP indicates some hubris given Chrysler’s history and current status.

While we had hoped that the Compass would demonstrate drastic improvement in driving experience and cabin quality, it is quieter, more comfortable, nicer looking, and generally just better to drive than the vehicle it replaces.

The Compass would be great for the non car buff, single outdoor enthusiast or active married couple with no kids looking for a no frills, utilitarian, compact 4×4 vehicle.

Despite this year’s improvements, the 2011 Jeep Compass ranks as one of the least desirable choices in the compact SUV segment

If the new, refreshed Compass were priced more realistically – which will no doubt happen when Jeep starts putting big cash on the hood – it might make sense as a cheaper, less enticing alternative to its bigger and better competitors.
