The improvements to the 2011 Lincoln MKX go well beyond cosmetics. The solidity of the original has been made more so, with exterior and interior styling that is distinctively upscale. Plus, the new V6 and better brakes add some adrenaline to the driving.

The updates to the 2011 Lincoln MKX are so substantial that this crossover might as well be a brand-new vehicle. Its flaws of heavy steering and a lag-prone control interface are more than offset by a quiet, refined powertrain and well-appointed cabin.

With more power, a quieter cabin and an interior that’s finally becoming of a true luxury brand, the MKX has the makings of a sales winner. We’re just not sure the Lincoln high-rider is far enough away from its kissing-cousin, the Ford Edge.

In a field crowded with five-passenger luxury crossovers, the MKX’s distinctive looks, sophisticated control interface, satisfying performing powertrain, and adequate passenger space, make it a worthy contender.

I like the look of the MKX’s interior, and somehow remain fond of the controls. After experiencing them, conventional controls look and feel antiquated. But, by any practical measure, the MKX does nothing especially well.

Lincoln took a big swing with its redesign of the MKX, adding distinctive looks and a more user-friendly, tech-loaded interior, but the hefty as-tested price is enough to make us give a second thought to that loaded Edge across the showroom.
