While the 3 hatchback is a personal favorite, the Mazda 2 is not simply a clone that’s undergone a magical shrinking ray. It’s got its own character. I envy the lucky teenagers who are invariably going to end up with this car.

While it appears that The Mazda would be our choice over the Fiesta, we’ll have plenty of opportunities to compare them, and to pit the Mazda2 against the likes of the Nissan Versa (advantage: Mazda), Toyota Yaris (advantage: Mazda), and the Honda Fit (too close to call, yet).

The Mazda2 is proof that a small, slow, inexpensive car can be fun to drive quickly. There are other subcompacts that offer more power, better fuel economy and premium features, but none can put a smile on your face like this littlest Mazda.

While it is fun to drive a slow car fast, it’s even more fun to drive a not-so-slow car even faster. And the Mazda2 manual affords that opportunity, while being significantly cheaper than the Fiesta.
