At least in our eyes, the MAZDA3 is the undisputed lightweight champion of the world. Your money absolutely cannot be better spent than with a MAZDA3. Period.

With numerous innovative options, class-leading dynamics, engaging driving character and a new look, the 2010 Mazda 3 seems set once again to claw its way to class leadership. It might not be a revolution, but it clearly ain’t broke.

The new Mazda3 is likely to remain one of our favorite small cars. It is proof that a small, relatively economical car doesn’t have to be a penalty box.

Here’s a car with room for four adults and one magical halfling; a car with excellent rear cargo storage and good fuel economy; a car with a sticker price within reach of every waiter, barista and entry-level clerical whipping boy in the San Fernando Valley. And it rips.

The outgoing Mazda3 was good, and Mazda’s decision to keep changes minimal pays off. The 2010 model shines in just about every way.

For 2010 the Mazda3 gets all sorts of small improvements as well as a modern new design and big horsepower rating that will have current and potential Civic owners doing a double-take.

The Mazda3 is a standout car. Is it silly to compare a $21,000 Mazda to a BMW 128i? No, because the BMW’s 10 percent higher fun factor — addictive as it is — isn’t worth 100 percent more.

If someone is looking for a car that is fun to drive, responds well to driver input, and costs well under $20,000, look no further than the Mazda3i.

The 2010 Mazda3’s incredibly fun, economical chassis is still there and responsive as ever, but we’d prefer it without the superfluous accessories.

The 2010 Mazda3 is a complete package that’s as economical and practical as it is engaging and responsive, something few companies get right.
