The Mazda3 graduates from the “cheap car” segment into the premium car arena, where some of its would-be competitors may be resting on reputations cultivated when the market was less competitive.

The 2010 Mazda Mazda3’s cabin tech is good, but not the best in the business. However, its performance and utility sit well above that of your average economy car.

The 2010 Mazda3 hatchback is a honey to drive and a practical delight to use. But it suffers from tire noise on coarse surfaces, so-so mileage, and is priced a bit high.

The 2010 Mazda 3 is almost like a good sports car, especially when equipped with one of the slick-shifting manuals. In fact, it’s vastly more fun to drive than some traditional “sporty cars” like the Scion tC or the Mitsubishi Eclipse.

So the Mazda 3 looks good (depending on your taste), offers a lot of options, is well powered, and handles great. It may be smiling at you because it’s happy you made a good choice when shopping in the compact sedan segment.

Even if the 2010 Mazda 3 is not the roomiest or cheapest car in the compact class, it’s about the most fun you can have without blowing the budget on the Mazdaspeed version, on a VW GTI or on the Subaru WRX STI and Mitsubishi Evolution.

If a 5-passenger mid-compact with a sunroof, banging Bose stereo and an average of 28-mpg, all for around $20K is exactly all you need, there’s no reason why shouldn’t be happy with the Mazda3. Just don’t expect much more.

Compared with the Civic or Corolla, the 3’s major advantage is that it’s available as a 5-door hatchback. On the road, the 3 definitely feels like a Civic and Corolla love child, providing most of the ‘Rolla’s comfort with a smidge of Civic sportiness.

For small-car fans who understand that small needn’t mean boring or bland or bashful, the Mazda3 remains a top contender.

My complaints notwithstanding, I’m sure there will be plenty of hot-hatch drivers who will better appreciate MazdaSpeed3’s raucous behavior. I just found it sort of raw-boned considering the greater refinement of the competition.
