The 2009 Mazda5’s handling was sporty, the interior roomy and flexible, and the exterior proves a minivan doesn’t have to be a boring blob-orb.

So for a hair under $25,000, you can get a loaded, versatile, fun-to-drive package. If I had to pick an efficient, inexpensive car to take the kids to soccer practice in, the Mazda 5 would be it.

In my eyes, the Mazda5 is the Swiss Army knife of cars. It’s compact, easy to maneuver and has a flexible interior that’s capable of hauling up to six people.

What you get with the Mazda 5 is a slick little package that makes you wonder why other machines can’t be as well done.

As much as we would prefer to not have to deal with a minivan, the Mazda5 is the one we would pick for the pure “fun to drive” quotient.

The Mazda5 minivan is fun to drive. How can this be? The secret’s in its size, as the six-person Mazda5 is significantly smaller than traditional minivans.

The Mazda 5 may not fit the traditional mold of sedan or minivan or even crossover. It can haul stuff, carry kids, and handle the traditional commute, hitting 27 miles per gallon on the highway and 21 mpg in the city — both respectable numbers.

The Mazda 5 distinguishes itself with sliding doors and a price that’s hard for any small vehicle to beat. It’s main shortcoming versus its competitors is its limited front and second-row dimensions.

Easing the pain of owning a family-friendly car, the 2009 Mazda5 is part minivan, part sportswagon, and makes owning a family vehicle actually fun.

One cannot help but admire the Mazda 5 that combines sporty and utilitarian virtues at such a reasonable price. Yet there’s no denying that this cute vanlet is a niche vehicle that faces stiff competition.

The 2009 Mazda Mazda5 Grand Touring is an interesting choice for a budding family, primarily because there’s nothing that directly compares to it on the market.
