We never thought we would see another gullwing from Mercedes after a 55-year absence, but it’s here, a coupe capable of taking on almost any sports car in the world. This SLS AMG will prove to be one of the great sports cars of the early 21st century.

The Mercedes-Benz AMG SLS is one of those cars that frightens other drivers right off the road. And yet this is one of the most civilized supercars around, with all the stunning performance you’d expect from a $200,000 aluminum-spaceframe supercar.

A true gullwing beauty, the SLS AMG embodies everything you want in a high performance two-seat supercar. Weighing just 3,573 pounds and with 563 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque, your passenger will undoubtedly scream in fear or delight when you mash the throttle.

The SLS Roadster rocks, all right. With the stability control set to maximum liberality—the Sport+ setting—it’s all pretty drama-free. Try to refrain from laughing like an insane pirate.

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster is an odd mix of luxury and raw performance. It’s plenty comfortable, easy to get in and out of and makes the iconic Mercedes SL look plain in comparison. Unless you drive it like a racecar, you’re missing out on half the fun.

The SLS AMG is with a doubt the most engaging series production car to ever wear the three pointed star. The Gullwing is back and suddenly Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche can count Mercedes-Benz among their most serious rivals.

More than just a return to a gull-wing design, the 2012 SLS AMG is the best-performing Mercedes ever made, despite some quirks that should be ironed out over time.

The SLS makes the transition to a convertible surpassingly well. No surprise, it’s best when your foot pins the accelerator mercilessly to the floor. Which might remind you that, like the coupe, the convertible is rated to travel at up to 197 mph.

The SLS AMG is striking and beautifully constructed. It rides surprisingly well for a supercar. Throttle response is progressive, and power builds quickly.
