With the FR-S, Scion engineers have managed to craft the perfect autocross car. In fact, the FR-S is destined to become the next Mazda Miata/MX-5 in terms of affordability, competitiveness, and cult interest.

The FR-S is about driving dynamics that are some of the best we’ve experienced, combined with an affordable price and a total package that can be used for both the weekday commute and the weekend track session. Scion nailed this one.

The Scion FR-S is the most gratifying sports car to come along in years. The FR-S is more than the sum of its performance results. The tactility and control afforded by this chassis belies its modest sub-$25,000 price tag.

The 2013 Scion FR-S is surprisingly good. It displays a fantastic balance, with a more neutral setup than we’ve found in many cars priced at twice the FR-S’s starting point of $24,930. It’s simply a joy to drive—a real sports car.

The FR-S is affordable and it is fun. With its back seat and trunk you can even convince the spouse that it is practical. With its 25 mpg combined manual and 28 mpg combined automatic you can even say it’s economical.

This Toyota/Subaru joint venture has met our expectations in every way, and in some areas, the 2013 Scion FR-S has even exceeded them. And, most remarkable of all, has brought back the fun and affordability of an everyman’s…and woman’s…sports car.

Sure, you could buy any number of boring FWD sedans for around $25,000. But why? Instead, why not buy the FR-S, a similarly priced car that can turn driving from being a monotonous chore to a real experience?

The Scion FR-S rewards a good driver, and is perhaps the best tool we can think of to develop and improve your performance driving skills. It’s comfortable, functional and refined. Add to this surprisingly good fuel economy and a price well below the $30,000 mark and the car’s appeal is vast.

Count us impressed. The Scion FR-S brings a level of coherence, refinement and driving pleasure to a price point that has seen interesting cars from time to time, but not something like this.

The FR-S is a pure sports car, one that delights us with its suspension dynamics rather than trying to impress us with raw horsepower. Casual drivers may not appreciate this car’s sublime subtleties, but I have no doubt enthusiasts will line up for blocks to buy one.

The 2013 FR-S can be more fun to drive than many sports cars costing thousands more. It comes well equipped, gets better fuel economy, and is a blast to drive right out of the box without having to add any performance mods.
