From the driver’s seat, the Scion xB provides an unusually high feeling of command for a small car. It’s nimble, fun to drive, and the brakes are outstanding, although the ride can be jagged over certain types of bumps.

The price of $16,950 is a good deal lower than the competition from, say, the Kia Soul, but the Scion is larger and more powerful. The other square-box – the Nissan Cube – is even more compact, and much weirder, albeit in a neat way.

The Scion xB was never meant as a dynamic driving device. When it comes to driver involvement, it is put to shame by the newer Kia Soul. It is a great car for college students and baby boomers trying to regain some youth. It is not, however, a car for people who pursue the joy of driving.
