I’d hazard to say the 2009 Subaru WRX becomes the top choice over GTI, C30, Civic SI, or even the Mazdaspeed3. Especially if driving is your thing.

The Subaru Impreza WRX and WRX STi are fun, fast and well built, with standard all-wheel drive and overall performance that’s rare in their class. They’re also practical, with decent room in the back seat and good cargo capacity.

Despite it’s amazing performance, the WRX is just a highly modified Impreza. In pretty much every other way the Subaru WRX performs impeccably and had me wishing there was one permanently parked in my driveway.

All in, this is one of the most fun Subarus we’ve driven. The eagerness of the 2.5-liter turbocharged four and the stickiness of the all-wheel drive are not new characteristics, but the lack of body roll, the composure, and the precision that this car has over its ho-hum WRX brethren is a very welcomed change of pace.

This is no miracle. It’s just a somewhat subtle improvement by degrees. But the 2010 Subaru Impreza WRX STI Special Edition, like the stock STI, is a ton (actually, 1.7 tons) of fun, and well worth the money, especially considering that it’s cheaper.
