A $1300 government tax credit is currently available on VW diesels. Should the first U.S. Golf TDI drive anything like this Euro car we just may be filling out some adoption paperwork ourselves.

The price is on high side for compact hatchbacks, but the Volkswagen Golf had a premium look and feel inside and out, and the diesel drivetrain was designed for a long life.

All models share all the fundamental Volkswagen Golf goodness: mostly comfortable seating, a big cargo area, and front-wheel drive with decent compromises between ride and handling, even with the sport suspension system. The advantage of the TDI is fuel economy.
