The GLI is a joy to drive. Business-like exterior, comfortable interior: a sedate-looking sedan that’s capable of thrilling dynamically but prefers not to shout about it. It could just be this generation’s E39 BMW. It’s that good.

The Jetta GLI is a dual-purpose machine that works well on both accounts. A quick, agile and athletic sport sedan for those times when the spouse and kids aren’t around, it is also a sensibly sized, all purpose family sedan.

Having a GLI-exclusive engine really makes this a special Jetta. Kudos go to the true believers in Wolfsburg who managed to put the good stuff back into the Jetta.

The GLI is a good-to-very-good entry-level enthusiast car. With more room, and just a bit more practicality overall, than its GTI sibling, only the car’s slightly less keen handling holds it back from being our go-to Volkswagen.

The GLI starts at about $7000 more than the cheapest, price-leader Jetta. But this is a whole lot more car, and it goes a long way toward redeeming the latest version of VW’s most popular sedan.

Increased fuel expense and the GLI’s higher sticker price buy you a clear upgrade from lesser versions of the Jetta. It’s not enough to raise it to the top of the sporty compact class, though.
