TDI Cup racing Jettas are stripped of all nonessentials, which keeps the curb weight well below that of the street car. But our test car was over $30K. That seems like a pretty hefty sum for a race-car replica.

I loved the 2010 Volkswagen Jetta TDI because of the handling, but hated the sluggish performance. And with a bottom line of just over $30,000, there are a lot of alternatives that might suit most people better.

If you want a Jetta TDI sedan and like to drive, this is your car. The firmer GLI suspension, larger brakes, and upgraded antiroll bars go a long way towards making it exciting to drive. Of course those upgrades do nothing to address the modest horsepower of a TDI engine.

The Volkswagen Jetta TDI is safe, comfortable, and genuinely fun to drive. Well equipped with plenty of standard features, the Jetta also holds its value over time, and doesn’t cost very much to begin with.

On balance, Test Drive is happy to forgive the interior faults because the Jetta TDI is roomy and comfy, and the engine’s personality quickly makes the car such a pal.
