The Golf R is a quick car, but if you are acquainted with real sports cars, you won’t be overwhelmed. More specifically, it definitely feels quicker than the front-drive, 200-hp GTI, but it’s not in another league.

The new R20 is the most wicked production Golf the factory has ever bolted together. It ought to easily dust the last R variant to see U.S. shores which seemed to offer only incremental performance gains over the already highly satisfying Golf GTI.

The 2012 Golf R is a great vehicle for point-and-shoot driving. By opting for the GTI’s turbo four, VW has made the Golf R more nimble than the nose-heavy R32. However, the turbo takes a bit more time to spool up into its sweet spot.

To compete with the likes of the Evo and the STI, VW would need to consider a spicier variant – a bit lighter, a little more powerful, and more focused. Until then, however, the Volkswagen Golf R has given us a very capable gran turismo dressed in a hatchback body.

The VW Golf R smothers the overrated old 247-hp VW R32 V6 in all ways but exhaust sound satisfaction, and we think it feels more a premium effort than the 263-hp Mazdaspeed.

We were enamored by just how good the Golf R is, and how much better its dynamics are over a standard GTI. It’s tuned to be more engaging than a GTI could ever dream of while still retaining the hatch’s high levels of comfort and quality.

This boy racer went to finishing school, and it shows. Power delivery won’t snap your head back, but the Volkswagen R punches off the line with smooth authority. It may not be as fast as the Evo or STI, but that’s not immediately obvious.
