Take any car at all over the brilliant roads that we drove in the great American West, and, unless you’re numb to fun altogether, you’ll have a great time. Do so in a car as good looking, comfortable, and satisfying to drive as the S60 T5 AWD, and you’re likely to remember it for life.

While the 2012 Volvo S60 T6 R-Design doesn’t challenge the best of its German rivals in all-out performance, it is deceptively fast, handsome, and overall a very capable and extremely comfortable sport sedan.

Our admiration for the S60 has never been about ultimate performance. We love this Volvo for its striking design, impressive value, and understated luxury with a subtle sportiness that keeps things fun. None of that changes with the S60 T5 AWD.

The S60 R-Design is a well-executed, sporty addition to the Volvo lineup, at a price that undercuts comparably powered BMW 335s and Audi A4s.

The competent suspension, responsive handling and good engine performance is only half the story. The 2013 Volvo S60 T5 AWD is a handsome and daresay charming alternative to upscale import and domestic compact sedans.

Despite being the segment’s value choice, I’d call the S60 T5 AWD my second choice in this segment behind the 328i and ahead of the A4 Quattro. It’s about two paddle shifters and a 5% better weight balance away from perfection.

The 2012 Volvo S60 sedan is probably the best-looking car ever penned by Volvo. It’s an absolute delight on roads where you can come close to exploiting its potential without going to jail, a hospital, or both.

So a tad over $50,000 all-in for a safe, stylish, torque-happy European sports sedan that’s not an Audi or BMW – and priced significantly below both. The 2012 Volvo S60 R-Design is far from a no-brainer decision, but it’s one that our hearts can get behind.

The S60 R is the ultimate choice for the owner who likes to drive fast without drawing attention. It can function as the perfect family sedan, but under that veneer of civility lies the turbocharged heart of a revitalized lion, ready to prowl and pounce on lesser prey.

Not only is there an emphasis on design, both inside and out, but there’s also an edge to the stylish and surprisingly sporty S60 that Volvos of the past have lacked. The S60 looks to satisfy those with a passion for driving as well as a passion for safety.
