Chevrolet Spark

There are all sorts of arguments for and against cars as small as the Chevrolet Spark. My take: Who the hell cares? The Spark is cheap, cute, and charming, and that’s reason enough to buy one.

Hyundai Azera

If you can do without cutting-edge driving dynamics or high-tech gadgets, the Azera is the best deal you’re going to find on a luxury car, bar none. Toss in the long warranty and ever-increasing resale values, and it’s difficult to see why one would pass up an Azera.

I can’t say I’m head-over-heels in love with the A4, but I have a deep respect for it. I still maintain that German cars are not the be-all and end-all — but if that’s something you’d like to believe, buying an Audi A4 is the best way to convince yourself.

Could GM have made the Regal better? No doubt — but doing so would add to the bottom line, and while an A-plus Regal GS might be woth $45,000, I don’t know if the buying public would go for that. So I guess we’ll just have to settle for an A-minus.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class

As far as I’m concerned, the C has been fixed — thanks to its vastly improved interior, new coupe body style and 1.8 liter turbocharged engine. With all the improvements, it’s finally worth the money.

BMW 5 Series

I’ve always seen BMWs as one-trick ponys, but the 550i is the first Bimmer that really can do it all. It’s one of the most impressive luxury cars I’ve driven. If I rated cars with thumbs, I’d grow an extra so I could give it three thumbs up.

Jaguar XJ

The XJ does everything a Jaguar should do. It’s beautiful inside and out. Its road manners are smooth, serene, and competent. And most importantly, it envelops its occupants in a cocoon of opulence of which even Her Majesty the Queen would surely approve.

I’m still a fan of the 528i. I’m impressed that BMW has given us a fuel economy improvement of around 8% while improving performance and without altering the basic character of the car. If this is the future of fuel economy, bring it on!

Mercedes-Benz S-Class BlueTEC

Outside, the S350 Bluetec rattles at idle like an exceptionally well-bred London taxi. But inside, all is peaceful and serene. Other than the diesel engine, this is the same ol’ S-Class I’ve come to know and respect.

Ford Fusion

This new Fusion does seem to have it all: Grace, space and pace. With European styling, American room, and a value-for-money equation somewhere in between, I think this car will be a big hit. I’d certainly spend my own money on one.

Cadillac ATS

The most important thing about the ATS is that it gives luxury buyers a new and unique choice. This is a car that performs as well as its competitors from around the world, but is distinctly American and distinctly Cadillac.

Scion FR-S

The FR-S is a pure sports car, one that delights us with its suspension dynamics rather than trying to impress us with raw horsepower. Casual drivers may not appreciate this car’s sublime subtleties, but I have no doubt enthusiasts will line up for blocks to buy one.
