Chevrolet Volt
Hatchback |
The new plug-in hybrid electric Chevy Volt is a great little car. It’s green, comfortable, and peppy. Too bad about the price.

Ford Shelby GT500
Coupe |
You get macho good looks and plenty of power for thousands less in a Camaro, Challenger, or Mustang GT. But if you want the best car in the class, you have to pay up for the Shelby GT500, at least until the Camaro Z28 finally makes its appearance.

Honda Odyssey
Minivan |
If you don’t mind their nerdy image, minivans offer more space, utility, and high-end features for the money than do luxury SUVs or crossover vehicles. The Odyssey’s greatest appeal is its cabin, which is roomier and much nicer-looking than the old one.

Hyundai Sonata
Sedan |
The front-wheel drive Sonata, Hyundai’s best-selling U.S. model, is bigger, quicker, more sophisticated, and more fuel-efficient than the model it’s replacing.

Infiniti’s new M56 offers luxury with a healthy dose of horsepower. It’s a nice car, but not quite the BMW-killer Infiniti hoped for.

The 2011 Jaguar XKR Coupe is insanely fast, elegant-looking, and starts at less than 100 grand. It also creates a stir wherever you take it.

Lexus CT Hybrid
Hatchback |
The CT 200h is a niche product that isn’t for everyone. But it’s a vehicle I’d definitely consider buying for myself, especially as a second car. It’s main competitor is the Prius, which seems clunky next to the CT 200h.

Lexus RX Hybrid
SUV/Truck |
Most people can buy a hybrid RX450h instead of a conventional gasoline-powered RX 350 without giving up anything—whether it be money, convenience, or performance.

2010
Lincoln MKT
SUV/Truck |
Just about the only thing I don’t like about the new Lincoln MKT is the way it looks. In Tuxedo Black, the MKT looks like it should be leading a procession of mourners to the nearest cemetery.

Lincoln MKX
SUV/Truck |
If you’re in the market for a midsize crossover vehicle, the Lincoln MKX merits a test-drive, especially if you’re considering the Cadillac SRX. It’s better than its flagging sales would indicate.

If elegance, exclusiveness, and a touch of sportiness are your priorities, the Maserati Gran Turismo convertible is an excellent choice.

2011
Mazda MX-5 Miata
Convertible |
There’s nothing with the Miata’s 24-grand base price that can compete with its sportiness. It zips around like a hyperactive water bug. This is a great little second or third car for shoppers on a tight budget.
